Anne Monk is a teacher at Elmwood High School in Winnipeg who, with her students, tilled a corner of the high school yard and planted native prairie plants. The plot, measuring 700 square meters, contains 8 prairie grasses and 25 flowering prairie plants. The students, under her direction, studied the tallgrass ecosystems and pre-settlement prairie, the use and destruction of the prairie, prairie restoration as well as some basic prairie plant identification.
Anne is currently developing a curriculum-based unit of study on prairie and prairie plants, which is intended to help other teachers create similar projects in their own schools.
The Manitoba Naturalists Society is proud to honour Anne Monk for her work, which so closely parallels the objectives of the Society. Her achievement is a shining example of what can be done by one, and a challenge for us all!
