In the western area of Riding Mountain National Park lies an exceptional ecosystem that is sometimes overlooked - the Aspen Parkland. It is a community that has undergone an astonishing amount of change over the past century. I'll present some of the challenges and, yes, successes in protecting the Aspen Parkland in RMNP. I'll contrast the work of Ralph Bird, who in 1961 authored a small book called 'The Ecology of the Aspen Parkland' with our present understanding. I think you'll find that some of the changes that have occurred since Bird's work are, surprisingly, great news. I'll also outline how we in RMNP are trying to change our management approach to keep the good news coming.
