A life history strategy of slow growth and late sexual maturity have made Lake Sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) particularly vulnerable to over-fishing and habitat fragmentation. Over the last century, population declines have been sufficiently severe to lead to the potential listing of the species under the Species at Risk Act in Canada. Understanding the biology of Lake Sturgeon is essential if conservation efforts are to be successful. Dr. Anderson’s research takes a holistic approach integrating ecology, physiology, development and cell biology to provide a broad understanding of the species and scientifically based strategies for appropriate recovery measures.
