Celebrations on The Great Trail

Events across Canada celebrate 24,000 kms of trail

On August 26th, 2017 people across Canada will be hitting the trails to celebrate The Great Trail - a 24,000 kilometer multi-use recreation trail created by Trans Canada Trail and their partners. There are 14 events to choose from in Manitoba! See a listing of Manitoba events below and check out The Great Trail for more info and updates. All events take place on August 26, 2017.

Roblin, MB - Crocus Trail  10am: Along the trail there will be checkpoints where trail users will receive an entry to put into a draw as well as a token item related to that location (i.e. ice cream from the restaurant). The more checkpoints visited on the trail, the more entries they will have into the draw. Names will be collected and entered into a draw for prizes and gift certificates or merchandise. Rossburn, MB - Duke’s Dash or Dawdle and Dine  10-4pm: Meet at the Ag-Rec Centre. A 10 km walk, run or bike from Vista MB to Rossburn MB with cultural stops along the way. Pancake bar at Vista and lots of activities for all ages in Rossburn including music of different cultures, and kids activities. Contact Shelly 204-859-2779 for more info.

Carberry, MB - Carberry North Cypress Trail  11am: Join us for a community walk/run/half marathon. There will be a band playing as participants return, as well as having food and drinks for everyone to celebrate their accomplishments of completing their desired runs. Glenboro, MB - Glenboro South Cypress Trail  11am: Walk, bike, run, or hike the Great Trail. Spruce Lakes Recreation District will have a BBQ and music following your trek. The event will also mark the official launch of the Spruce Lakes Roadrunners running/cycling/walking club. For more info contact Brian Mintenko at gcdc@glenboro.com

Victoria MB - Spruce Woods Hike and BBQ:  We will be holding an end of year volunteer appreciation BBQ at Wayside Park in Cypress River, MB, on Highway 2. The park is directly on the Trail. Before our BBQ we will be holding a group hike from Spruce Woods Provincial Park, being led by locals who are able to identify the various flora and fauna found on the Trail. After the hike we will be serving hot dogs and drinks, and having a campfire with smores and campfire songs. For more info contact Kaley Young at edo@rmofvictoria.com

Stanley, MB - Valley Hike: Join us for an organized walk on a spectacular valley section of The Great Trail, located in close proximity to the city. For more info contact Leon Hendrickx at leon.hendrickx@pioneer.com

Headingley, MB - Headingley Grand Trunk Trail  9am: We will have experts available to do a species identification of the area and share this knowledge with attendees. St. Andrews, MB - Red River North Trail:  Join us for a hike through this portion of RRNTA - TCT from along River Road near Lockport and head towards Lower Fort Garry (Federal Park) and through the River Road area to Selkirk Manitoba in the RM of St. Andrews. Tyndall, MB - Red River North Trail  2pm: Join us for a hike along this section of the RRNTA-TCT from north of Garson and through the Town of Tyndall in the RM of Brokenhead. Grand Marais, MB - Red River North Trail  11am:  Join us for a hike along this section of the RRNTA-TCT from the Grand Beach Campground Store in Grand Beach Provincial Park to the Grand Beach cottage area, and on to Grand Marais and the Grand Marais Community Club. Belair, MB - Grand Beach Provincial Park walk 11am: Trail Walk at Grand Beach Provincial Park - Begin at the Campground store area and walk to Lester Beach and culminate at the Town of Belair with a windup Food at the Lester Beach Community Club area at the outdoor sportsfield. Pine Falls, MB - Red River North Trail  11am: Join us for a hike along this section of the RRNTA-TCT from the former CN (CEMR) railbed under the ownership of the RM of Alexander through part of Sagkeeng First Nation and then through the Town of Powerview-Pine Falls. Pinawa, MB - Pinawa & Lac du Bonnet Trails  7am:  The Pinawa and Lac du Bonnet Trail Associations are pleased to host a Trans Canada Trail Celebration! 2017 is a big year for Canadians and now we, along with our partners at Trans Canada Trail, have another reason to celebrate. The Great Trail will finally connect us from coast to coast to coast and it’s a great place to get together. We will gather to explore the Pinawa and Lac du Bonnet trails. There will be bus transportation available to transport us from trailhead to trailhead, as required. By 3:00 PM we will gather at the Pinawa Dam Heritage Park where we will enjoy refreshments while enjoying the music of the Pinawa Stage Band. Speeches and more music will follow. Falcon Lake, MB - South Whiteshell's Great Trail Fest  1pm:  Meet us at the big tent across from the Falcon Lake Mall. What will be there? Trail information and displays, Blue Highway information (mountain biking), live music, pulled pork on a bun, popcorn and trial shirts, free cake. Starting at 1:00 pm there will be bike decorating, face painting, chalk art mural of The Great Trail, bike maintenance clinics and a supervised bike skills area for all ages. There will be an after party guided group bike ride on Blue Highway Trail (for various skill levels). Meet at Caddy Lake Resort and Campground at 5:30 pm.
